Tata Motors, the largest automobile maker of India is all set to manufacture compressed Air Powered cars in 2008. In February this year, Tata acquired licensing from MDI (Moteur Developpment International) to develop and manufacture these cars in India. The car boasts zero pollution, which is a big plus for over polluted cities in India.
According to MDI, a Barcelona company, their compressed air powered cars come in two different configurations:
- Single energy compressed air engines
- Dual energy compressed air plus fuel engines
As you might have guessed, the Dual energy version has the capability to switch between compressed air and fuel engines and offers longer driving distances. Though Tata Motors has not confirmed this, it is expected that they will introduce the single energy air engine cars first.
The air car can reach a top speed of 69 mph and can travel about 120 miles on a single fill of compressed air. It takes about 4 hours to fill the tank with compressed air at home or just 2 minutes using an industrial air compressor at the pump. The cost to refill the tank is expected to be approximately $2 for the full tank. Compare this to the rising cost of gasoline and what it takes to fill a full tank. The air engine works by using compressed air which pushes the pistons and creates movement. The friction heat generated is used to re-heat the engine and the air conditioning system uses the expelled cold air.

Please keep me informed…….Is the Tata air car project still on??….when will the car be comercially available in India???
Nice report, and very informative. With ever-increasing petrol prices, we need to find an alternative to fuel consumption.
Thanks for posting this.

Why do the American Tax payers have to keep paying for the oil, When this car uses only compressed air to commute . I believe the only reason for America not adopting this technology is on account of their greed for the revenue created by high cost of oil! And also in order to keep America in Slaved to pay such high Prices to commute! When The Technology exist to eliminate the high prices of oil, The U.S. ignores the exsistance, on account of the money they can steel from the American tax payers at the pump!…
Americans are being Robbed by their country! in two ways! first the Tax payers are paying for a War in Iraq for the oil. At the high cost of Two Trillion Dollars! Instead of Adopting the technologies in order to eliminate such catastrophe’s in any and all foreign countries , as two trillion dollar wars over such things as oil…. When a human life is worth more than oil. Also when the country is in grave Deficit financial y, they continue going into debt farther and farther! instead of adopting the technologies, To keep this from happening over and over again.
Also if you want to get reamed? Move to America! and get reamed at the pump ! Americans are enslaved by OPEK And the greedy political figures who run this country! Who figured it out! why change the fuel? when we can still charge exuberant prices for it, and the public has no choice but to pay the price! How has America changed from the time; moses was enslaved by Egypt. We still are Slaves to Egypt and other countries who have the most oil reserves. When there is an alternative to the use of fossil fuels. and a cleaner earth! America the Ugly,Greedy,Dirty, polluting, thieves that they are.
IT SOUNDS like all this compressed air would cause quite an explosive force if punctured.(Just, like an automotive geek said, hydrogen is quite a free-spirited and flammable substance, hard to manage and explosive.) Has anyone checked out how practical a solution this is?
