BMW unvieled it’s first hybrid vehicle called the “X6″ ActiveHybrid crossover at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The vehicle uses the two-mode technology it co-developed with GM and Mercedes Benz. In the first mode, at low speeds the vehicle can operate under any combination of electric-only, gasoline-only or electric-gasoline combo power. In the second mode, at higher speeds, the engine can run on 8-cylinder or 4-cylinder mode with electrical motor assist for extra gas mileage. An intelligent controller makes the determination as to which mode the vehicle should operate in.
It’s expected that the vehicle will provide a 20% efficiency over similar non-hybrid SUVs.
