The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is the first full-size hybrid SUV and comes equipped with a 6.0 liter V8 powered Vortec gasoline engine and two compact 60kW electric motors powered by a 300-volt lithium-ion battery.
The hybrid version has undergone some design changes over the regular version which include some improved aerodynamic features and a lowering of the front by about 10 mm.

The vehicle offers a two-mode hybrid system which leverages the GM Active Fuel Management System. In the first mode, at low speeds the vehicle can operate under any combination of electric-only, gasoline-only or electric-gasoline combo power. In the second mode, at higher speeds, the engine can run on 8-cylinder or 4-cylinder mode with electrical motor assist for extra gas mileage. An intelligent controller makes the determination as to which mode the vehicle should operate in. According to GM, the shift between the two modes is synchronous, meaning that the transition is smoother due to no speed change required in-between shifts. Regenerative braking as well as the gasoline engine are used to charge the 300-volt battery.
The 2008 Hybrid Chevy Tahoe is expected to be available in fall as a limited release in selected markets. Pricing information is yet to be released.
