ZAP, in collaboration with Lotus Engineering, has built a concept all-wheel drive EV crossover SUV named “ZAP-X“. Each of the wheels has its own inline electric motor power allowing the car to travel at a top speed of 155 mph and zip from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. The electric motors, together with the super capacitors, deliver energy bursts of 644 hp while the advanced battery system allows the car to travel over 350 miles on a single charge. The cost of recharging the battery? About 1 cent per mile. According to ZAP, the batteries can be charged in under 10 minutes and will take over 9,000 charge cycles before needing to be replaced. And what does ZAP stand for? Zero Air Pollution! What else?
Most of the controls in the car are electronic touch screen with an onboard computer running Windows XP. Other gizmos include GPS, HD video support, WiFi support, Blue-tooth and iPod ready. The ignition and the keyless entry are both biometric secured.
Built using Lotus Engineering’s APX (Aluminum Performance Crossover) design, the ZAP-X competes with other high end EV vehicles such as the Tesla Roadster which is also built in collaboration with Lotus Engineering.
Date of production and pricing are unknown at this point.
