Ford and Airstream have partnered to create a very futuristic looking crossover concept called “Ford AirStream” influenced by the 1960s Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The AirStream is a plug-in hybrid that uses hydrogen fuel cell technology from Ballard to derive power for it’s battery pack. The vehicle has the HySeries Drive powertrain just like the Ford Edge concept car and provides a gasoline equivalent 41 mpg. The car can go 25 miles on electric power alone. With the hydrogen fuel cell stack working as a generator the range of the vehicle extends to 280 miles on one tank of hydrogen.
The design of the vehicle is ultra-futuristic on the outside as well as the inside. The instrument panel is flush-mounted with touch sensitive controls. A dual view screen provides a camera view from the instrument panel. The driver and the passenger sit in pod shaped swivel seats. The front passenger has access to the coolest mobile blogging gadgets to blog on the road. The rear passengers have a lounge seating with a large 360-degree screen for entertainment and games.
This is one cool looking vehicle. If you are hoping to go out and get one, don’t hold your breath. It is likely to be several years out.
