Bush signs new fuel economy standards into law

President George Bush signed a new energy bill that raises fuel economy standards for the first time in 30 years. The law provides a 10 mpg average jump in fuel economy standards that automobile manufacturers will be required to meet by 2020. The corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) level for all vehicles in the US will be 35 miles a gallon by 2020 and the hope is that this efficiency will reduce our dependence on foreign oil by 2 million barrels a day. The cost of these vehicles is likely to be higher by about $15,000 compared to existing vehicles.

The new law also expands the availability of biofuel by requiring oil refiners to replace 36 billion gallons of gasoline with biofuel by 2022.

Lawmakers made their point by sending the documents up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House in a Toyota Prius.
