Paper-thin Batteries for your Hybrid

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institue have developed a paper-thin battery using advances in Nano technology and engineering. The ultrathin battery can be folded or bent just like paper and is very light.

The coolest part is that the battery can be printed like paper. It can also function as a high power super capacitor as well as a lithium-ion battery. The main components of the battery are carbon nanotubes which are just one-millionth of a centimeter thick and act as electrodes.

With this breakthrough, researchers hope that this ultra thin, paper-like battery will be some day used in small electronic devices such as pacemakers. Other potential uses could be in hybrid automobiles where battery real estate and weight plays a major role.

These batteries cannot be yet mass produced economically, though researchers hope to be able to do so in the not to distant future.
