Gibbs Technology, a UK based company founded by New Zealand entreprenuer Alan Gibbs, is introducing two amphibian vehicles in the US market starting in 2009. After over 10 years of research and development, the company holds 60 different patents in the field of amphibian vehicles.
One of the vehicles being introduced in the US is the Quadski, a high speed amphibian all-terrain vehicle, which can travel at speeds of up to 50 mph on land and water using a 140 bhp motor. It can make the transition from land into water at the flip of a switch under five seconds. The Quadski could potentially be used by life guards and emergency personnel in addition to nature and outdoor enthusiasts. Gibbs plans to price these single person amphibian ATVs for under $18,000.
The second vehicle Gibbs plans to introduce to the US is the Aquada, a very stylish amphibian sports car with a top speed of over 110 mph on land and the ability to travel at more than 30 miles per hour on water. Gibbs expects to price the Aquada at under $80,000.
Both of these vehicles will use the Gibbs patented High Speed Amphibian (HSA) technology.
In addition to the two civilian vehicles, Gibbs also plans to sell a military version in collaboration with Lockheed Martin. Gibbs has showcased a concept version of a 4-wheel military amphibian vehicle called the Humdinga.
Gibbs is said to be considering various locations in Texas and other states to setup a manufacturing facility and has selected Autocom as its PR firm in North America.
