Popularity of Hybrid Cars Increasing Worldwide?

It seems Israel is going green in a big way. Reports released by the Environment Protection Agency of Israel shows that there is a significant increase in the number of Hybrid cars being sold in Israel during the first half of 2007. Israel has also directed all it’s diplotmats in the US to exclusively use Hybrids. Israel wants to reduce it’s depedence on middle ease oil and putting long term plans in place to achieve greater energy independence.

Though the US remains the largest hybrid car market accounting for over 70% go global sales, the list of countries adopting hybrid automobiles is on the rise. European countries with the highest gasoline prices are promoting alternative fuel vehicles. In Asia, India is experimenting with CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) as well as compressed air powered cars.

The premium over similarly equipped gasoline models coupled with the need for larger cars remains a factor in the slow adoption of Hybrid vehicles in the US. A recent report from J.D. Power and Associates claimed that the demand for Hybrid cars was waning in the US while at the same time, interest in clean diesel cars was on the rise.

It is expected that that Hybrid car prices will even out with the gasoline models as manufacturing efficiencies improve. The early adopters of any new Hybrid model get the benefit of federal tax credits. Some states are also providing additional incentives by giving rebates to Hybrid car purchasers. Large corporations such as Bank of America and Google are also giving incentives to their employees to purchase Hybrid vehicles. In the US, Toyota and Honda remain market leaders in Hybrid vehicle sales and remain optimistic of their sales projections in the coming years. Another report by two environmental groups projected the benefits of large scale adoption of PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) by 2050 in the US, equivalent to removing 80 million gasoline cars off the road.
