French car maker Peugeot is showcasing a new environmentally friendly car called the “308 Hybride HDi” at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The vehicle is powered by a 1.6L HDi DPFS 110 bhp diesel engine and an electric motor providing an additional 22 bhp. For start/stop operation and cruising speeds, the electric motor is solely used and is powered by a Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) 200V battery. The battery is charged using regenerative braking.
At higher speeds, the diesel engine is assisted by the electric motor which provides a combined gas mileage of 83 mpg with just 90g/km of CO2 emmissions. Production is expected to start in 2010. Currently, there are no plans to offer this vehicle in the US market.
