Getting 100 miles per gallon in your Prius

Wall Street Journal reporter Joseph White, wrote an article titled “Plugging In to the Future - Getting 100 Miles Per Gallon While Driving to Work In a Modified Toyota Prius”. He starts the article with “I drove to work one day last week in a prototype car that is either a harbinger of a far more fuel-efficient future, or another in a long line of technological insurgencies that will fail in the end to crack the auto industry’s century-old status quo.”. He is referring to a Toyota Prius that was modified to house a Litium-ion battery pack and plug-in capability to recharge this battery pack through an electrical outlet. As I reported in one of my previous posts, there are numerous experiments being conducted by scientists as well as by automobile manufacturers on plug-in hybrids.

Watch this video of WSJ’s Joe White test driving a Toyota Prius modified by a lithium-ion battery pack, to see if it can operate for 40 miles almost entirely on electric power.

In a regular hybrid such as the Prius, the battery is mostly charged through regenerative braking, which is the process of capturing energy lost during the braking process for storage in the battery. In a plug-in hybrid, an extra battery pack is charged through the electrical outlet like how phones or other electronic devices are charged. The car is generally plugged into a specially designed socket on the garage wall and takes about 6-8 hours to fully charge the battery. During the drive, the extra battery provides the power to the electrical motor even at higher speeds to keep the vehicle on battery-only mode. Some experiments have demonstrated a range of up to 40 miles on battery power alone. This could potentially mean that you would never have to fill gas in your plug-in hybrid if your commuting distance is within that range. And, if you have any excess battery capacity, you could make money from your plug-in hybrid by selling electricity to your utility company.

The cost of converting your existing hybrid to a plug-in hybris is pretty high. A company called Hymotion sells conversion kits costing about $9,500 retail for the Prius and the Ford Escape Hybrid. Another company called eDrive also sells the conversion kits. The kits include a Lithium-Ion battery which is put into the hybrid, along with the NiMH batteries that come from the factory. Some experts are of the opinion that if the car manufacturers buy these kits on a large scale, the pricing could go down to under $4000 each kit. A company named CalCars also sells a do-it-yourself kit for under $5,000.
