Toyota shows off a new Hybrid called 1/X

Toyota is showcasing a new Hybrid concept vehicle at the Auto Show in Japan. Dubbed 1/X (pronounced as one-Xth), the plug-in hybrid is about two thirds lighter than the Prius. In addition to being lighter, it is also two times more fuel efficient than the Prius. How did Toyota make the 1/X ligher than the Prius and other comparable car? Through the use of carbon fiber reinforced plastic in the vehicle frame which is a lightweight alternative to a metal frame. The vehicle is equipped with a 500cc engine that can be run on flex fuel and backed with an electric motor that can be charged through the electric grid.

As to when this might be available in the US, it’s probably a few years out.
